THE ALCHEMY OF LEADERSHIP IN COACHING

by Maria Felice Cunningham

Every leader needs to cultivate the leadership skills that produce long lasting results. Someone can lead an organization without concrete interpersonal skills and produce short term revenue gain, but they have over looked creating the high performance talent needed to sustain excellence.

True leaders take responsibility for the future success of their company—they do the hard work needed to learn exceptional communication skills and then build a culture of community, purpose and transformation.

Organizations around the globe are learning a lesson the coaching industry has valued for years—creating a company culture which engages its employees and cultivates personal growth will not only help companies succeed in good times, it builds the organizational stamina required to weather uncertain times.

Employees crave a working atmosphere that encourages honesty, creativity, self awareness and self-management—in short, authenticity. Coaching in a business environment requires your coach to become a visionary strategist as they focus on long-term attributes such as growth and longevity. Next, they build commitment to purpose as a team. When mixed with the alchemy of the human consciousness factor, a powerful catalyst for positive results is created.

Management teams are choosing to incorporate coaching techniques into their organizations as a step toward improving morale and poor performance. Now, more than ever, the day of having an internal coach as a leader model has arrived, and incorporating their skills into your business can pay off in increased profits, higher morale, lower staff turn over, higher productivity and best of all; fully committed employees whose contribution is valued.

The first thing a coach needs to establish is the core of what employees really want, and this is often different from what it may seem on the surface. Without engaging values, a coach cannot create a shared vision that challenges the current mental models, turns them upside down and begins the long process of stewarding a culture where everyone contributes to a larger purpose—one that goes beyond the walls of individual cubicles.

The justification for building a coaching culture in business is simple; when employees grow, so does a company’s potential. Coaching isn’t just magic; it has a dynamic impact in the real world. Introducing leadership skills through coaching will bring about powerful changes that contribute to ROI, improve performance beyond management’s expectations, and bring profound inspiration to its workforce.
